Akl Awit (born 1952,
Beirut) is a
Lebanese poet, critic, literary journalist and academic professor. He is the editing director of the MULHAK, the weekly cultural supplement of the daily Lebanese newspaper
An Nahar.
He has already published eight poetry books in Beirut, and an anthology of his works has appeared in Cairo in 2002. He is about to publish his ninth poetry collection.
His poems have been translated from Arabic into many foreign languages, and have been published in various magazines and anthologies in France, England, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Akl Awit holds a PHD in modern Arabic literature, and teaches Modern poetry and
journalism at the
Saint Joseph University in Beirut.
Some of his literary, socio-cultural and political articles cause polemics. His "letter addressed to God", an editorial which appeared on the front page of the newspaper on the eve of the American war against Iraq, provoked a lot of reactions. Accused of blasphemy, he was brought before the courts.
